Why couples pick Cancun & Riviera Maya
Cancun and the Riviera Maya are the most-booked Mexico stretch for US resort weddings: short flights from much of the US, dozens of all-inclusives, and beach venues that photograph well.
Compare Mexico-side packages on our package table (filter Destination: Mexico) and brands like Excellence, Hyatt Inclusive, Palace, RIU, Barceló and Club Med Cancun.
Entry rules for US visitors
- Passport. US citizens need a valid passport book for air travel to Mexico. A passport card is not accepted for flights. (US State Department, travel.state.gov Mexico page.)
- Visa / FMM. US tourists generally do not need a Mexican visa for stays up to 180 days. Air arrivals get a digital Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMMd); immigration stamps your passport on arrival. (travel.state.gov; Mexican INM.)
- Return ticket. Officers may ask for a return or onward ticket. Keep your passport valid for the full stay.
Always re-check travel.state.gov before you fly — entry rules change.
Marriage & ceremony basics
- Legal vs symbolic. Only a civil marriage by the Registro Civil is legal in Mexico. Most free resort "weddings" are symbolic unless you add a civil ceremony. See our free vs legal guide and the full Mexico rules page.
- State rules differ. Requirements vary by state. Cancun / Riviera Maya sit in Quintana Roo. Quintana Roo repealed the prenuptial medical-certificate requirement (Civil Code art. 682 frac. II, derogated; Periódico Oficial 23 Jul 2026) and made pre-marriage health talks voluntary — but other Mexican states still require medical certificates done in Mexico. Confirm with the local Registro Civil for your municipality.
- Typical documents. Passports and proof of legal stay; apostilled US birth certificates with official Spanish translation when required; divorce or death certificates if applicable; witnesses with photo ID (often four in Quintana Roo municipalities). US Embassy Mexico: only civil registry marriages are legal.
- Timing. Playa del Carmen materials have cited multi-week lead times to resolve paperwork. Book the civil piece well ahead if you want a legal Mexican marriage.

- Photographer, hair/makeup, and any off-resort dinner if those are not in the package.

Best season
Dry season roughly December–April is the classic window; hurricane season runs about June–November (Atlantic). Shoulder months (May, late November) can be cheaper with warmer water. Always check the current tropical outlook before locking deposits.
FAQ
Do we need a Mexican visa for a Cancun wedding?
US citizens visiting as tourists for under 180 days generally do not. You need a valid passport book for air travel; Mexico issues a digital FMM (FMMd) for air arrivals. Confirm current rules on travel.state.gov before you fly.
Is the free resort wedding in Cancun a legal marriage?
Usually not. Most free all-inclusive packages are symbolic. Sandals/Beaches/Couples legal packages are Caribbean-focused; Mexico brands often charge extra for a civil ceremony. Ask the resort in writing and read our free vs legal guide.
Can same-sex couples marry in Quintana Roo?
Same-sex civil marriage is legal across Mexico's states (since 2022). Confirm the local Registro Civil appointment process for your municipality.
